Party for the 140th anniversary of ‘Vesuvius’ in Naples, the hotel of VIPs – Luxury

That of the Grand Hotel Vesuvio, on the Naples seafront, is a 140-year life, which began by welcoming the first Belgian writers and then prestigious guests such as Queen Sofia of Sweden, the French writer Guy de Maupassant, Oscar Wilde and Gabriele D’Annunzio . And, again, characters who have stayed there over time and have also inspired the welcoming places of the structure. The terrace is dedicated to the tenor Enrico Caruso who spent the last days of his life in the hotel in 1921. In the 1950s, the “La Vesuvietta” night club hosted the hotel’s jet set: Rita Hayworth, Clark Gable, Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier of Monaco, Gina Lollobrigida. There are many men and women of culture, artists, scientists, politicians who have frequented it since the 90s. The scientist Rita Levi-Montalcini, the President emeritus Giorgio Napolitano, the director and actor Woody Allen, Sofia Loren. The book of signatures is a succession of iconic characters. Bill Clinton, tenor Luciano Pavarotti, Lucio Dalla, Bruce Springsteen, actors Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow, Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts. The birthday was celebrated with the publication of the volume edited by Annunziata Berrino, Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Naples, Federico II “Grand Hotel Vesuvio, Naples 1882-2022” (Editors’ Guide, graphics by Adriano Alfaro) which reconstructs and interprets the history of one of the most prestigious hotels in Naples. Vesuvius was born in 1882 with the name of Hotel du Vésuve, from the will of the Belgian entrepreneur and banker Oscar De Mesnil, to build a hotel to offer services to the customers of the Bagni del Chiatamone, hundreds of thermal baths built by him to compete with most fashionable places in Europe. “We wanted to celebrate such an important milestone and I thought that telling the story of Vesuvius would be like telling the story of Naples, because the hotel is a crossroads where the most important and influential people in the world have met in the last 40 years” , says Sergio Maione, president and CEO of the Grande Albergo Vesuvio spa. The great iconographic work collected in the volume recalls every historical moment of the hotel.
Required by the Germans with the Second World War, the hotel underwent a bombing and two restorations: in 1950 by Michele Platania who redesigned the facade, enlarged the building and increased the rooms; since 1989 under the direction of the architect Luigi Casalini. “It is a book designed and created in the name of innovation. First of all innovation in the narrative, because the long history of the Grand Hotel Vesuvio is retraced in the light of the most recent international interpretations of the history of tourism”, thus the author of the book, Annunziata Berrino, Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Naples Federico II, talks about her work (ANSA).
