Rio Carnival canceled. Brazil is fighting COVID-19.

The decision was announced by the mayor of the city Eduardo Paes, quoted on Wednesday by the Reuters agency.

“The street carnival, by its nature, for democratic reasons, cannot be subject to any inspection,” commented Paes.

Both the carnival parade through the streets of Rio de Janeiro and the accompanying events were canceled. However, there will be a parade of samba schools, which the public will watch from the stands of the city’s Marques de Sapucai sambodrome, with all necessary precautions. Last year, this part of the traditional Rio carnival parade was also canceled.

Other Brazilian cities have also canceled their parades. Salvador, by the ocean in eastern Brazil, announced this decision last week. Likewise, street carnival parades were canceled by the city of Belo Horizonte, the capital of the state of Minas Gerais. Meanwhile, Sao Paulo plans to move the traditional street parade to the Formula 1 race track.

The number of COVID-19 infections in Brazil continues to rise. The health ministry said on Tuesday that 18,759 new infections were detected and 175 COVID-19-related deaths were reported. So far, approximately 170 cases of the Omikron variant have been confirmed nationwide.
