Riots in the Netherlands. School set on fire, the prime minister calls people “idiots”

On the night of Sunday to Monday, there were once again riots in Dutch cities due to the restrictions introduced in connection with the coronavirus. This time the officers had to intervene, among others in Groningen, Enschede and Leeuwarden. A primary school was set on fire in Roosendaal. The authorities introduced a state of emergency in these cities that lasted until Monday morning.

Friday’s events in Rotterdam, when participants in an illegal demonstration against pandemic restrictions attacked the police, sparked a series of night riots in other cities. The restrictions in the Netherlands returned on November 13. Restaurants, shops and nightclubs cannot be closed after 20:00. Viewers are also not allowed to attend sporting events. The government also recommended that no more than 4 people be admitted at home. Deputy Prime Minister Mark Rutte said that these restrictions will apply until December 4.

On Saturday evening, the protesters clashed with officers, incl. in The Hague. There, the policemen were pelted with stones and fireworks. Five of them were injured. There were also, among others, Roermond in the south of the Netherlands and the coastal town of Urk.

The following night was also restless. On Sunday evening, several cars and a primary school were set on fire in Roosendaal in the south of the Netherlands. 15 participants of the incidents were arrested.

Attacks on officers also took place in Leeuwarden and Groningen in the north of the country. There, the policemen were pelted with stones and fireworks. A dozen or so demonstrators were detained.

Justice Minister Ferd Grapperhaus said on Sunday that the rioters in Rotterdam were mainly caused by football hooligans. These environments have links with organized crime groups said the minister.

Police have set up a special team to investigate the events that took place in Rotterdam on Friday. After the attacked officers opened fire on the demonstrators, four people were shot. The team consists of 20 people, informs the Rotterdam Police Headquarters.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte called the participants of the Friday riots in Rotterdam “idiots” and announced that they would be held criminally responsible.

Justice Minister Ferd Grapperhaus emphasized that the government will not change its strategy to fight the coronavirus “under the influence of the street”.

The prime minister spared no words on Monday. I will never accept that idiots use violence against people who care about our safety – he told reporters.

In his opinion, the “pure violence” with which we have experienced in Rotterdam and other cities has nothing to do with demonstrating one’s views.

According to the head of government, the police and the judiciary will do everything in their power to find the perpetrators.
