Rock in Rio will have a 100% recyclable stage | Culture, Design and Fashion

After two years of a pandemic, Rock in Rio is being held again in the city of Rio de Janeiro. The organization of the event presented the Palco Mundo, the main and largest structure for the festival’s shows. The novelty is that the stage will be made of steel, with a reused and 100% recyclable structure.

“Each time we show that it is possible to dream big and make it happen. This stage is another example of that. We understand that our story will inspire other people’s. This is the story we want to tell,” says Rock In Rio CEO Luis Justo.

He highlights that ensuring sustainability and involving all partners in this policy is one of the goals set by the festival. This year’s stage will be held in partnership with Gerdau, the largest Brazilian steel producer. According to Gerdau’s CEO, Gustavo Werneck, sustainability is also a concern of the company. “We have to implement actions as quickly as possible, so that we can continue using resources that exist on the planet and leave it to the generations that come after us”, he says.

Werneck and Justo participated, this morning, in an interview to detail the partnership at the festival.

Asked about the possibility of political demonstrations at the event, such as what happened at the Lollapalooza Festival, in São Paulo, in March this year, Justo stressed that the organization has no partisan position. According to the CEO, Rock In Rio “never had and will never have any kind of political positioning”. This, however, according to him, “does not prevent people from having positions, [sejam] artists or audience. It is inherent to democracy and has always been present in the history of the festival”.

On the Mundo Stage, approximately 200 tons of steel will be used, equivalent to the manufacture of 200 cars. The stage will be 30 meters high, similar to a ten-story building, and 104 meters wide, equivalent to two Olympic swimming pools.

The material will be 100% recyclable, that is, the scenography of the Mundo Stage will be eternally reused when it ceases to be a stage, being able to transform into houses, buildings, cars, hospitals, among others.

In all, over 1 million people, including waste pickers and cooperatives, are involved in Gerdau’s recycling process. Most of Gerdau’s steel, 73%, is produced from the recycling of scrap metal.

Rock In Rio will be on the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 8th, 9th, 10th and 11th of September. Brazilian and international artists such as Iron Maiden, Dream Theater, Sepultura, Post Malone, Jason Derulo, Marshmello, Alok, Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato, Migos, Iza, Guns N ‘Roses, Måneskin, The Offspring, CPM will perform on the Mundo Stage. 22, Green Day, Fall Out Boy, Billy Idol, Capital Inicial, Coldplay, Camila Cabello, Bastille, Djavan, Dua Lipa, Megan Thee Stallion, Rita Ora and Ivete Sangalo. The tickets are sold out.

Since 1985, Rock in Rio has had 20 editions, in Rio de Janeiro and in other cities around the world, such as Lisbon, Portugal, Madrid, Spain, and Las Vegas, in the United States, with the presentation of more than 2,300 artists. and 10.2 million people in the audience plus 12 million online fans.

The first edition of Rock In Rio was in 1985, when the country was undergoing transformations and was emerging from a long period of military dictatorship, since 1964. According to Justo, the expectation is that this year’s festival, after two years of a pandemic, will have a climate similar to the first. “We will be prepared for euphoria,” he says.
