Russia has released letters from France and Germany regarding the conflict in Ukraine

The 28-page correspondence between the heads of diplomacy of France – Jean-Yves Le Drian, Germany – Heiko Maas and Russia – Sergey Lavrov concerned Moscow’s refusal to participate in a meeting devoted to discussing the situation in eastern Ukraine.

On November 9, France accused Russia of being unwilling to start the talks scheduled for November 11. Meanwhile, Minister Lavrov was to explain his absence in a diplomatic note with “a very tight schedule”, related to the necessary presence in Moscow.

“When Russia’s approach to resolving the internal conflict in Ukraine and organizing a Normandy Four meeting is distorted, we have no choice but to take a non-standard step and disclose our correspondence to the public.”

– explained the head of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He added that “the public announcement of the date of the talks was tactless” on the part of the French and German partners.

Berlin said that “several specific” proposals for the date of the meeting had been presented to Russia, all of which were rejected by Moscow.

“We consider the step in the form of the publication of letters to be a violation of diplomatic practices”

– said the spokesman of the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs and added that “Germany and France have been working intensively for months to continue negotiations and implement the peace plan for Ukraine”.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel, commenting on the incident, said that “talks about peace in Ukraine are more important than disclosure of correspondence”.

“The reasons why the meeting of foreign ministers did not take place are certainly perceived differently by the French and German sides, and differently by the Russians,” she noted.

During Thursday’s press conference in Berlin, Merkel said that the publication of the letters “was not a surprise” and that “nobody has anything to hide” regarding the solutions to the Ukrainian issue that are being sought.

“It is only regrettable that a new round of negotiations on Ukraine could not take place”

– added the chancellor, mentioning that she tried to arrange a meeting with the Russian President Vladimir Putin – unfortunately to no avail.

The Normandy Four – Germany, France, Russia and Ukraine – was established in 2014 in order to work out solutions that would allow the end of the war in Donbas and the settlement of Crimea’s nationality.
