Slovakia is introducing a deposit system for aluminum cans and plastic bottles

In Europe, deposit systems operate in: Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, Germany, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Croatia, Norway and Iceland. Thanks to them, it is possible to recover approx. 90 percent. packaging. Slovakia will join this group from 2022. You will have to pay a deposit of 15 cents for each plastic bottle or can of drinks. Authorities warn against stocking up before the New Year, because the deposit only applies to marked packages. The deposit system already includes glass bottles.

Returning bottles and aluminum cans should be simple and resemble the deposit return system for glass bottles known in Slovakia for years. Just as the vending machine for glass bottles will not give you money for a broken package, you will not be able to get it back 15 cents for a crushed plastic bottle or can.

The purchase does not include crushed bottles and cans

When the vending machine system was tested, journalists tried to hand over crushed or crushed bottles to the collectors of vending machines. The machines accepted only those with slight damage. The Minister of the Environment, Jan Budaj, explained that the purchase does not include crushed bottles, as this would result in a flood of packaging from abroad.

The new system is explained by advertisements in newspapers, instructions in shops and billboards. The information campaign, as well as vending machines and manual code readers used for packaging settlement, was financed by the non-profit organization of the Deposit System Administrator. It was founded by four associations acting on behalf of producers of beer, soft drinks and mineral waters as well as representatives of wholesale and retail trade. In total, their members bring to the market almost 80 percent. of all returnable packaging and represent over 3,000 retail outlets.

The organization won a tender from the Ministry of Environment, in which it was the only candidate. The operator of the deposit system is to finance its activities from the sale of plastic and aluminum to recycling companies. The current increase in energy prices has also translated into the cost of producing PET bottles, and aluminum is also becoming an increasingly scarce commodity.

Special marking of bottles for purchasing

The packages covered by the system will be marked special “Z” character. Most of the bottles and cans purchased during the Christmas season do not have this symbol yet, so they will not be redeemable for a 15 cents deposit.

Proponents of the additional payback fee for plastic bottles and aluminum cans emphasize that the deposit for glass bottles is 2 cents lower, with almost 100% recovered. packaging. Before the introduction of the deposit system in Slovakia, it was possible to recover approx. 60 percent. PET bottles.
