Sweden. Prime Minister’s Choice. Magdalena Andersson will get another chance to form a government

The Swedish Social Democrat leader Magdalena Andersson, who resigned on Wednesday just hours after taking the office of head of government, will have another chance to establish a cabinet, said the speaker of the Swedish parliament. The reason for Andersson’s resignation was his withdrawal from the Green coalition after the centrist and right-wing opposition voted to adopt his proposed budget.

The former Swedish Finance Minister, Magdalena Andersson from the Social Democratic Workers’ Party, became the first woman in the country’s history on Wednesday to become Prime Minister. One vote decided about her election in the fragmented parliament. After a few hours, however, it turned out that the most votes from the MPs were won by the joint budget of the opposition formations: the center-right Moderate Coalition Party, the right-wing Swedish Democrats and the Christian Democrats.

The budget of the right includes, inter alia, a cut in the gasoline tax, which sparked opposition from the Green Party, which said they were leaving the government because “they cannot carry out activities contrary to their policy.” “In line with the practice, the coalition government should step down if one of the parties decides to leave,” Andersson said at a press conference.

On Thursday, the chairman of the Swedish parliament, Andreas Norlen, announced that he intended to give Andersson another chance to form a government. The Reuters agency noted that in the absence of another strong candidate, Andersson has a good chance of being accepted again by the Riksdag. The vote will probably take place on November 29.

According to the speaker of parliament, Wednesday’s events were “incomprehensible” to the Swedes, and the actions of Swedish political groups negatively affected faith in the parliament, the political system and politicians themselves.
