The program to modernize small arms used by US troops is gaining momentum. Although specific concepts of future weapons have not yet been selected, the military is already ordering new sights for them. It is a computerized fire control system that will give soldiers new possibilities.
XM157 Next Generation Squad Weapon – Fire Control (NGSW-FC) – this is the full name new crosshair, developed by Vortex Optics. The American military ordered 250,000. of such devices, paying for them USD 2.7 billion. The sights will be delivered for the next 10 years. What can they do?
XM157 is an extensive fire control system – the housing houses an optical sight with a variable zoom in the range of 1-8, rangefinder, laser target pointer, compass, ballistic computer, as well as a set of atmospheric sensors that collect data needed for accurate shooting. The device can also connect wirelessly to the Integrated Visual Augmentation System (IVAS) module responsible for target imaging.
NGSW – a new generation weapon
This modern sight will be mounted on the as yet undefined weapon – only this year will be the winner of the US ARMY-Next Generation Squad Weapons competition, which aims to develop a future-proof weapon for American soldiers.
Currently, after the resignation of the remaining candidates (Textron Systems was the last to drop out), SIG Sauer and Lone Star Future Weapons / True Velocity remained in the competition.
The new weapon for the new 6.8 mm cartridge will replace the previously used models such as the M4, M249 and M240 in the future. The winning bid will most likely be selected this fall.
