The return of cult comedies from the 2000s, spy thrillers and stylish biographies – we choose 15 premieres that we are waiting for.
“The Batman”: Again from the beginning
The new Gotham City superhero movie goes back to its origins with Riddler, Penguin and Catwoman (played by Paul Dano, Colin Farrell and Zoë Kravitz). Robert Pattinson will make his debut in a bat costume, and his Batman is to be the darkest in history. After the success of the “Dark Knight” trilogy, Christopher Nolan’s place behind the camera will be taken by Matt Reeves.
Legally Blonde 3: The Return of Elle Woods
Elle Woods is back! Legally Blonde hit theaters exactly two decades ago. The story of the resolute lawyer has stood the test of time, as evidenced by the ongoing work on the third part. The role of Elle will be reprized by Reese Witherspoon, and co-starring her well-deserved renaissance Jennifer Coolidge. Mindy Kaling, co-author of the successes of “The Office” and “Never Yet …”, is responsible for the script.
Babylon: A revolution in cinema
In the 1920s, silent films began to give way to soundtracks. Damien Chazelle, director of Whiplash, La La Land and First Man, shows how this revolution affected cinema. Fictional and historical characters will appear on the screen. Emma Stone was due to perform alongside Brad Pitt, but the actress quit due to pregnancy. Margot Robbie took her place.
“Blonde”: All about Marilyn
Netflix is working on the adaptation of the best-selling novel by Joyce Carol Oates of the same name. One of the most famous American writers, repeatedly nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, in 1999 published a fictionalized version of the biography of the most famous blonde Hollywood. The role of an icon will be played by Ana de Armas, whom Hollywood fell in love with after playing Joi, Ryan Gosling’s holographic beloved in “Blade Runner 2049”. De Armas will be the next actress after Michelle Williams (“My Week with Marilyn”) to face the legend.
“The 355”: Secret agents in action
Spy cinema in a female edition. Special agents from all over the world must join forces to stop a secret organization from destroying the world. Starring a galaxy of stars – Penélope Cruz, Lupita Nyong’o, Jessica Chastain, Diane Kruger and Bingbing Fan. Behind the camera was Simon Kinberg, screenwriter of “Sherlock Holmes”, “Mr. and Mrs. Smith” and “The X-Men.”
The Northman: Horror in Iceland
The new film by Robert Eggers, the director of the acclaimed “The Lighthouse”, is the most anticipated horror movie of the coming year. The Northman takes us on a trip to Iceland in the 10th century. The Viking Prince Amleth comes to the island to bring justice to his father’s murder. The cast includes an interesting mix – Nicole Kidman, Alexander Skarsgård, Ethan Hawke, Willem Dafoe, Björk and the director’s favorite with whom he has already worked on “The Witch”, Anya Taylor-Joy.
“Elvis”: A Biography of a King
After the success of “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “Rocketman”, the fashion for musical biographies continues. A film by Baz Luhrmann, the director of “Moulin Rouge!” or “The Great Gatsby”, will bring viewers closer to the first and last years of Elvis Presley’s career, devoting a lot of attention to his relationship with his mother (Maggie Gyllenhaal) and manager Tom Parker (Tom Hanks). The king of rock and roll was to be played by Harry Styles, Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, ultimately Luhrmann’s choice fell on Austin Butler.
“Avatar 2”: Meeting after years
More than a decade after the premiere of the first part, we will return to Pandora, where Jake and Neytiri live a quiet life in harmony with nature. As their former enemies return, the heroes and the other Na’vi must face the newcomers. The original cast, led by Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, will be joined by Kate Winslet, Michelle Yeoh and Edie Falco. James Cameron will be behind the camera again. Will the movie repeat the success of the first “Avatar”?
The Gray Man: Another Bond
Netflix’s high aspirations are best evidenced by the movie “The Gray Man”, which is to be the first part of the saga based on the novel by Mark Greaney. The platform wants to make the series a franchise like the adventures of James Bond. Court Gentry (Ryan Gosling), the eponymous Gray Man, a former CIA agent, becomes a hired murderer after leaving the service. When his friend becomes the new target of his old partner, Gentry rushes to save him. Netflix allocated a record budget of $ 200 million for the film. On the screen next to Gosling we will see, among others Ana de Armas, Chris Evans and Regé-Jean Page from The Bridgertons.
Lost City of D: A perfect duo
Next year looks promising for comedy fans. One of the most anticipated titles is “Lost City of D” starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum. The queen of romantic comedies will play the role of a writer who embarks on a promotional tour of a new book. She is accompanied by a handsome model from her cover (Tatum). When they are kidnapped, they will have to face not only the leader of the anti-system gang (Daniel Radcliffe), but also their own dilemmas.
White Noise: Apocalypse next door
Following the success of the Oscar-winning “Marriage Story,” Noah Baumbach returns with a new Netflix film. The adaptation of the postmodern novel by Don DeLillo of the same title recounts a year in the life of Professor Jack Gladney (Adam Driver). His beliefs will be tested when a chemical disaster occurs in his area. The apocalyptic reality reveals the façade of his perfect life. Next to the Driver we will see, among others Greta Gerwig, Jodie Turner-Smith and André 3000.
“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”: Another Marvel hit
After Chadwick Boseman’s unexpected death, the realization of the sequel to Marvel’s “Black Panther” was put into question. Initially, it was speculated that another actor would take his place. Ultimately, director Ryan Coogler decided to put King T’Challa’s sister Shuri (Letitia Wright) in the center. Lupita Nyong’o, Danai Gurira, Martin Freeman and Angela Bassett will return to the screen.
Deep Water: The Van Allen War
Over the past year, the adaptation of the best-selling novel by Patricia Highsmith, author of The Talented Mr. Ripley and Carol, has been largely due to the break-up of Ben Affleck and Ana de Armas. The acting duo play a crumbling marriage that has a sadistic game with each other. Nobody is safe in this game. In other roles we will see, incl. Jacob Elordi, or Nate from “Euphoria”.
“Disenchanted”: After a happy end
The 2000s come back not only on the catwalks. Nearly 15 years after the premiere of “Enchanted”, we will move back to New York to check what happened after “and they lived happily ever after.” Giselle (Amy Adams) and Robert (Patrick Dempsey) move to the suburbs. As problems with her new neighbors pile up, the princess will have to save her family. Everything, of course, in a magical and musical setting.
Hocus Pocus 2: The Sanderson sisters are back in Salem
Sequels to be continued. The Halloween classic starring Bette Midler, Sara Jessica Parker and Kathy Najima will also return to the screens. Nearly 30 years after the premiere of Hocus Pocus, the Sanderson sisters will return to Salem. They will have to face the reality of the third decade of the 21st century, which they do not understand. The creators announced even more black humor, musical pieces and inspiration for Halloween costumes.
