Statistics show a return to illegal migration. Number of people who entered Europe illegally in the last year, was 57 percent. higher than the year before.
In August last year Frontex said it was due to restrictions due to the coronavirus pandemic in 2020, the number of illegal crossings of the EU’s external borders decreased by 13% compared to 2019, to around 124,000.
Now the number of immigrants is “higher than the pre-pandemic (migration) levels …, suggesting that other factors besides the lifting of global travel restrictions are contributing to increasing migratory pressure,” said Frontex.
The agency recalls that a new factor increasing this pressure was the influx of immigrants via the northern route through Belarus, but does not provide data on the number of people who reached Europe via this route.
Frontex has also seen a significant increase in the number of migrants, who reached the EU via the central Mediterranean (65 362), the Western Balkans (60 540) and Cyprus (10 400).
In 2021, the majority of immigrants were Syrians, the remaining large groups were Tunisians, Algerians, Moroccans and Afghans.
