Jean Todt is about to step down as president of the FIA. After two terms, the French cannot run for another election, so the elections scheduled for December 17 will appoint a new head of the world federation. This does not mean, however, that the 75-year-old intends to leave the world of Formula 1 and retire.

According to “Corriere della Sera”, talks between Jean Todt and John Elkann were to take place several times in recent weeks. The president of Ferrari was to probe the possibility of the French returning to the Italian company as a consultant.

President Ferrari’s idea is simple. Todt would support the current F1 team leadership. A similar maneuver was used years ago by Mercedes, when he contracted Niki Lauda as an advisor. The Austrian, using his vast experience in the racing world, helped lift the Brackley team to the top of F1.

Todt was supposed to react positively to the proposal, which may prove that the legend’s return to Maranello is closer than everyone thinks. The French managed the Ferrari team since 1993, it was he who persuaded Michael Schumacher to transfer and together with him dominated F1. The duo celebrated another championship in the drivers ‘championship in 2000-2004 and the constructors’ championship in the 1999-2004 seasons. They were special, because Maranello had been waiting for the championship since 1979.

Ferrari won the last titles in the 2007 (drivers) and 2008 (constructors) seasons, after which Todt left the company and later ran for the head of the FIA. Currently, the boss of the Ferrari team in F1 is Mattia Binotto.

The British media has already noted that Jean Todt still maintains a close relationship with his former colleagues during his rule at Ferrari – Stefano Domenicali is now F1 boss and Ross Brawn is F1 sporting director. However, it does not seem to have had any impact on the sporting competition and favoring the Italian team.
