Twist of the scene: the former president of the Senate Schifani will be the candidate of the center-right to the Sicily Region

The confirmation came from Ignazio La Russa. The co-founder of Fratelli d’Italia explained to the news agency Handle that the center-right has chosen Renato Schifani as a candidate for the regional elections in Sicily, scheduled for the next one September 25th. Former president of the Senate, Schifani was selected from a shortlist of names proposed by Silvio Berlusconi: “I spoke to Giorgia Meloni who, unable to bring the whole coalition to converge on the outgoing President Nello Musumeci, accepted Silvio Berlusconi’s proposal to identify a name among the rose that the President himself proposed. The name identified by us, among the names made, is Renato Schifani ». The choice, explains La Russa, comes above all to preserve unity in the field: «As former President of the Senate, Schifani has shown in his institutional role that he is above the parties. Meloni communicated this preference to Salvini. Once again FdI makes the utmost effort for the unity of the center-right even at the expense of legitimate aspirations “.

Born in 1950, born in Palermo, Renato Schifani was President of the Senate from 2008 to 2013, in the legislature that first saw as Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi and then Mario Monti. Former exponent of the Christian Democrats, in 1995 he joined Forza Italia, where he remained until 2009. He followed Silvio Berlusconi in the transformation of his party into the People of Freedom and then from 2013 to 2016 he was part of the leaders of the Nuovo Centro Right, political formation led by Angelino Alfano disbanded in 2017.
