United Kingdom: Woman dismissed due to short stature

Tracey Scholes, 57, at the end of last year she lost her job after 34 years, as it turned out that in new bus model put into service on its route 152 cm tall it is not enough for her to reach the pedals by leaning back and looking in the rear-view mirror.

I cannot accept pay cuts says Scholes. She will face a final appeal against this decision on Tuesday.

In an interview with the Guardian, she describes it obstacles she had to overcome over the years in order to be able to work as a driver. During her first interview, she was informed that there were no women’s toilets in the depot and asked how she would deal with “bad words” used by other drivers. She had to find solutions to the physical challenges of working pregnant as well as deal with sexual harassment.

She endured it all without complaining to the managementbecause she wanted to “pave the way for women to come and drive the buses,” but now admits that the company’s decision to dismiss her because she was too short of stature, broke her heart. On the other hand, support from colleagues and from over 13 thousand people who signed the petition on heris upbuilding.

A spokesman for Go North West said Scholes she was a valued member of the team and received numerous offers, but they were rejected. – The design of the mirrors on our buses was agreed upon in consultation with Unite some time ago. All our other drivers, similar to Tracey’s height, are able to use them safely. Committed, experienced and hardworking bus drivers are hard to find, so we would never act recklessly in a situation like this. We are sorry we had no choice but to end the employment of this driver he declared.

The company also assured that it is working on improving the increase in the number of women at all levels, with an emphasis on the positions of drivers. Its purpose is increasing the number of female bus drivers by 2025 from 11 percent up to 20 percent
