Croatia-Brazil, the quarter-final of the World Cup in Qatar sees Selecao as the favourite. But there is an option, which according to the previous ones, can play against the odds: penalty kicks.
Croatia have just eliminated Japan on penalties in the round of 16. The undisputed hero was goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic, who saved three penalties against the Japanese players. Another goalkeeper, another national hero, scores the 2018 World Cup. It is Danijel Subasic, who saves three penalties in the eighth against Denmark, taking his national team to the quarter-finals. And then he repeats himself, saving just one penalty, but playing all the extra time injured, the match against Russia which is worth the semifinal.
Brazil, in the last 20 years, has only one precedent at the World Cup looking at games solved with penalty kicks. In Belo Horizonte, in the home World Cup which will end with the defeat (1-7) against Germany, the Selecao crosses Chile in the round of 16. The match ends 1-1, with goals from David Luiz and Alexis Sanchez. And from the penalty spot it is the fair of errors: the Brazilians Willian and Hulk and the Chileans Pinilla and Sanchez are wrong. We get to the last penalty: Jara makes a mistake, Neymar doesn’t. Brazil moves on to the quarterfinals where they will find Colombia.
